Arsenal news – Mertesacker deal on, Almunia set for La Liga, Chievo in for Vela

Almunia set for La Liga.

Manuel Almunia is thought likely to have played his last game for Arsenal, according to Goal.com.

With the fine recent form of boh Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny, Almunia appears superfluous to requirements and his recent injury troubles have frustrated manager Arsene Wenger, who now appears keen to cash in.

The Spaniard, who is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury which looks likely to rule him out for a further two to three weeks, is being tipped to leave the Gunners this month, bringing his tenure in north London appears at an end.

A move to his native Spain appears the most likely outcome, with both Malaga and Atletico Madrid interested in capturing the 33-year-old’s signature.

Mertesacker deal on.

The First Post has insisted that long-term Arsenal target Per Mertesacker is finally on his way to the Emirates this month, and claim that Arsene Wenger has even tabled an £8.5m offer already in a bid to land the 6ft 5in defender.

Current club Werder Bremen have vaued the German international at around £10m, but the Gunners believe their offer will prove hefty enough to encourage a deal.

Mertesacker was first linked with the north Londoners almost a year ago, and with criticism of Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci it is felt that Wenger has finally bowed to pressure and reached for his chequebook.

Competition could come in the form of Liverpool, who are desperate to reinforce at the back in order to breathe new life into their flagging season.

Chievo in for Vela.

Italian outfit Chievo have joined the race for Carlos Vela, reports FansFC.com.

The Mexican, who was handed the number 11 shirt at the start of the season, has struggled to make an impact on the first team and has made just four substitute appearances thus far.

Bolton or West Ham are favourites to take the 21-year-old on loan, and Valencia also want to bring in the striker. Chievo have now thrown their names into the hat as well, and a deal would likely see the player return to north London after the season’s end.
