One key stumbling block could be Ronaldinho’s desire to return to his homeland. The attacking midfielder has his heart set on a move back to Brazil, with Gremio in the hunt to resign the former Barcelona man. However, the bid to bring him to Blackburn has shocked the footballing world and Venky’s are hoping that they can land their man. Ronaldinho would be the marquee signing at Ewood Park. Not only are Rovers without several key mid-fielders through injury, but the team also currently lack a spark of imagination, someone who could make an immediate impact. The Brazilian has dazzled on the European stage for some years now, and although he is ageing, many believe Ronaldinho could still have a lot to offer in the Premier League.
Indeed, as is the case with every courageous bid, some supporters simply cannot believe the rumours. Some Rovers fans, on the message boards of the local newspaper as well as on fans forums, are sceptical about the whole saga and believe that the apparent move for the Brazilian is a publicity stunt by Venky’s. However, others are genuinely excited by the ambition being shown by the Indian owners. Ronaldinho is the biggest name to be linked with a move to Blackburn for many years. Of course, as mentioned earlier, Ronaldinho’s desire to return home could rule out any such move to England. In fact, Gazzetta dello Sport has stated that the Brazilian has signed for Gremio, whilst other sources claim he is still analysing other offers. Crucially, no official statement has been made about any secured signing by either AC Milan or Gremio, therefore Rovers are still in the hunt and will not give up hope.
Meanwhile, manager Steve Kean has also indicated the club are interested in bringing midfielder David Beckham to Ewood Park on loan. Several clubs are thought to be chasing Beckham, including the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle, however Kean believes Rovers would be the right choice for the Englishman simply because they can offer him game time. Other potential transfer targets include Damien Duff and Roque Santa Cruz.
As for matters on the field, Blackburn face Roy Hodgson’s struggling Liverpool side at Ewood Park tonight, where Kean will be hoping his side can put the disappointing 3-0 defeat against Sunderland behind them and aim to get a point or three. Liverpool have been woeful on their travels this season, so a win for Rovers is not impossible. However, the Blues have several absentees and although Chris Samba is likely to be back from injury, Rovers could be without half a dozen key players for the game.
