Sir Alex Ferguson has promised fans he “won’t be making the same mistakes” as last year when selecting his team for the third round FA Cup tie against Liverpool this Sunday.
United were knocked out of the competition at this stage last year for the first time under Ferguson – going down to a solitary goal against Leeds United at Old Trafford. The Red Devils’ boss told United’s in-house magazine Inside United,
This is United’s longest spell without an FA Cup win under the longest-serving manager in the club’s history and that doesn’t sit right with the Scotsman, “It is an important trophy so there is a strong desire to get our hands on it, we haven’t won it since 2004 or been to Wembley in the final since we lost to Chelsea in 2007. So we definitely want to get back there, and we want to win it.”
The last time United met Liverpool in the FA Cup was in a fourth round tie at The Theatre of Dreams in the club’s historic treble season. United emerged 2-1 victors with two goals in the last two minutes from Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskj
