The Guardian reports that Glen Johnson will start on the right of midfield for Liverpool in today’s derby against Everton. With Steven Gerrard suspended, it is predicted that Dirk Kuyt will move into attack to partner Fernando Torres, with Johnson filling in the spot he vacated on the right. Martin Kelly will retain the right-back spot.
Paul Konchesky again misses out, the Brazilian Fabio Aurelio preferred to him, whilst Ryan Babel’s outburst on Twitter following Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester United last week seems to have done his first team prospects no favours at all. He is expected to stay on the Liverpool bench.
Carra backs Kenny.
Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Jamie Carragher voiced his delight at Kenny Dalglish’s appointment as Liverpool caretaker manager.
The defender, predicted to return from a shoulder injury in early February, called Dalglish a Liverpool legend and claimed it was important to have such figures around the club.
“Unfortunately I haven’t been involved on the training pitch with the manager to see if there are different ideas or training but the whole city has had a massive lift,” he said. His presence will particularly be felt on derby day, he said. “For me and Stevie (Gerrard), he’s a hero for us and I’m sure the foreign players will work out what it means to the supporters when the teams come out for the weekend.”
Reds target Suarez.
Luis Suarez is top of Liverpool’s wish list should John W. Henry permit Kenny Dalglish to open his chequebook during the January transfer window. Initially Henry and Damien Comolli, Liverpool’s sporting director, had planned to be cautious in the transfer window, only moving when a key target became available. However with the team struggling in mid-table, it is thought that Dalglish will be able to persuade the owners to invest.
The Sunday Telegraph also reports that Liverpool have taken an interest in Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing, to add to their chasing of his teammate Ashley Young.
