In a remarkable twist of events, Ryan Babel has joined Hoffenheim, signing a two-and-a-half year contract with the Bundesliga cub.
The two clubs had earlier agreed a £6 million fee, but negotiations had stalled following Liverpool’s interest in Luis Suarez and Babel’s interest in being used as a makeweight in that deal.
As recently as Monday, Dalglish had told the Daily Telegraph, “He is staying here.” The Dutchman, it seems, was turned by the lure of first team football, something which has been hard to come by since his 2007 move to Merseyside. “I am looking forward to my new mission with Hoffenheim,” he said. “My first impressions are absolutely positive. I now hope to be able to quickly get into the team.”
Suarez holds Ajax talks.
Luis Suarez has met up with Ajax officials to discuss his future, the Daily Telegraph reports. It is believed that the Uruguayan striker will try to coerce the Amsterdam giants to reduce their £30 million valuation of him, thus paving the way for him to join Liverpool.
Liverpool are reluctant to meet what they perceive to be an exorbitant asking price. So far, the Merseysiders have bid just £12.7 million – an offer rejected out of hand. Fenway Sports Club are thought to be reluctant to pay more than £20 million for the controversial World Cup star, whilst Frank de Boer will not sell the player without time to find a replacement. The transfer, it seems, hangs on Suarez’s ability to persuade Ajax to drop the asking price.
Lucas issues warning.
Whilst the Brazilian midfielder believes that performances have improved since Kenny Dalglish was appointed caretaker manager, Lucas Leiva has urged Liverpool not to make rash long term predictions based on one victory over Wolves.
“At the moment I think we would not be clever if we start to talk too much about Champions League or the Europa League,” he told Liverpool’s official website in the build up to Wednesday night’s game against Fulham. “I think we deserved it (the Wolves victory) with the way we played and hopefully we’ll keep the same level in the next few games.”
