Newcastle in talks for Cardiff striker Bothroyd

The Daily Mail understands that Newcastle are in talks with Cardiff over a deal for English striker Jay Bothroyd.

The Cardiff number nine, who is out of contract in the summer, has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs including Fulham, Birmingham, Blackburn and Everton. The ex-Arsenal striker has been in terrific form for The Bluebirds this season playing 19 games and scoring 15 goals in the process.

The 28-year-old, who recently made his international debut for England against France, will expect to triple his £10,000-per-week salary if he moves to a Premier League team.

Talks between the clubs are set to continue after Newcastle play their derby against Sunderland on Sunday at the Stadium of Light. It looks like Newcastle will be without star striker Andy Carroll for that game, as he has just returned to light training after injury.

In other Newcastle news, Birmingham winger Sebastian Larsson’s proposed move to St James’ Park has fallen through after talks between Newcastle and the player broke down.
