Leeds Utd news – Lichaj sign, Snodgrass Scotland debut, Somma international goal

Lichaj signs.

Leeds United have signed Aston Villa defender Eric Lichaj on a one month loan deal. The USA U20 international joined the squad on Thursday and is expected to be part of the side in Saturday’s clash against Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Following Paul Connolly’s withdrawal from the action against Coventry City last Saturday with a hamstring injury, United boss Simon Grayson has moved quickly to cover the gap. Talking to leedsunited.com Grayson said: “We’re delighted Aston Villa have agreed to let him come. He is a player they have high hopes for and they believe him coming to Leeds will be beneficial for him and us.”

The 22 year old is reported to possess a long throw, and should prove a useful addition to the squad.

Snodgrass Scotland debut.

Robert Snodgrass made his international bow on Wednesday night, coming off the bench for Scotland in their comprehensive 3-0 win over Northern Ireland in the Carling Nations Cup.

The 23 year old winger replaced Stephen Naismith of Rangers 10 minutes into the second half, and produced an impressive display, twice going close to a debut goal with curling efforts. The man who introduced him to senior football at Livingston, Allan Preston, told the Yorkshire Evening Post that Snodgrass moving to Leeds was the best thing he had ever done: “He’ll look back on it [his move to Elland Road] as the right move at the right time” he said. “Leeds gave him a clean break and a fantastic chance to make the best of himself.” Snodgrass had the reputation as being difficult in his teenage years, but Preston believes those days are firmly behind him: “Simon Grayson’s using him every week at a club where you can’t hide or pull the wool over people’s eyes, and that’s a sure sign he’s ready for Scotland.”

Somma international goal.

Leeds United striker Davide Somma continued his rich vein of goalscoring form whilst on international duty last night.

The South African striker notched his first International goal in a 2-0 win over Kenya. The friendly played in Rustenburg, scene of England’s 1-1 draw with the USA in the 2010 World Cup, was a warm up for a crucial African Cup of Nations qualifier with Egypt which takes place next month. Somma took just two minutes to open the scoring , beating the offside trap to fire in off the post. Tottenham new boy Steven Pienaar grabbed the second for Bafana Bafana in a comfortable victory. Uniteds other international Ramon Nunez was in the squad for Honduras as they drew with Ecuador in a friendly. The game ended in a 1-1 draw with the Ecuadorians triumphing 5-4 in a penalty shootout.
