Leeds Utd news – Lichaj wants extension, Gonzalez return, Barnsley team news

Gonzalez return.

Leeds United look likely to lose on loan goalkeeper David Gonzalez.

The Colombian international was signed from Manchester City on deadline day to provide competition for Kasper Schmeichel and Shane Higgs. However with City’s own back-up Shay Given now injured, the Premier League club are suddenly short of experienced cover for first choice keeper Joe Hart.

Despite the Blue’s problems, Leeds boss Simon Grayson insisted Gonzalez was remaining at Leeds for the time being. Talking to the media in his pre-Barnsley press conference the United boss said: “We’ve had no phone calls in terms of recalling players. David’s been working hard in training and he’s pushing to get into the squad.” Gonzalez was included in United’s squad for today’s reserve team fixture against Lincoln City.

Lichaj wants extension.

Aston Villa full back Eric Lichaj is hoping to extend his loan deal at Elland Road until the end of the season.

The 22 year old US defender signed for a month as cover for the injured Paul Connolly but has impressed in his first two appearances. With first team opportunities limited at his parent club, Aston Villa, Lichaj told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I just want to be playing and this is a great club and I’d like to stay until the end of the season if possible.”

Despite breaking into the Villa first team at the start of the season, Lichaj drifted out of favour under new manager Gerard Houllier, and chose Leeds to gain experience over other Championship clubs: “Leeds are a bigger club than the other two who were interested” Lichaj said.

Barnsley team news.

Leeds are expected to be unchanged for tonight’s Yorkshire derby against Barnsley at Elland Road.

Leeds have just Paul Connolly (hamstring) and long term absentee Patrick Kisnorbo (achilles) on the injury list. Sanchez Watt is now fully recovered and is expected to be fighting for a place on the bench. Leeds will be looking to exact some measure of revenge over the Tykes, who inflicted an embarrassing 5-2 defeat to Leeds back in September. Leeds will be hoping for three points to maintain their promotion ambitions before the long trip to Swansea City for the live TV clash on Saturday.
