Liverpool news – Caution on Gerrard return, Skrtel to stay, Cole self-appraisal

Caution on Gerrard return.

Steven Gerrard will have to be patient as he waits to make his return to Liverpool’s starting-XI following a groin injury which has kept him out of the side for the past two games. It had initially been hoped that Liverpool’s captain would be fit enough to make his return for the Europa League match against Sparta Prague. However, Kenny Dalglish is urging caution ahead of his return.

Dalglish has promised to “think a bit longer term than just one game”. Whilst he admitted, “Steven is almost there,” he reiterated that he would not “push somebody into a game that’s not quite ready.

“If he’s fit, he’ll come under consideration like anybody else,” Dalglish told The Guardian.

Skrtel to stay.

Martin Skrtel insists that he is happy at Liverpool despite reported interest from Bundesliga side VFL Wolfsburg.

The speculation about the Slovak’s future on Merseyside comes as a surprise as Skrtel is a Premier League ever-present this season. Like the rest of the team, his performances, having dipped under Roy Hodgson, have seen a massive improvement under Kenny Dalglish.

Skrtel was quick to dismiss the rumours. “I have learnt about the interest of Wolfsburg only from the internet and don’t even know how true this news is,” he told Skysports.com. “I have a valid contract with Liverpool, I am happy there, and they are happy with me too. I am not going anywhere,” he insisted.

Cole self-appraisal.

Joe Cole is the first to admit that his debut season with Liverpool; has not went to plan. Of his twenty appearances for the club, only one has come under Kenny Dalglish, highlighting the range of injury problems he has been beset with. Indeed, it may seem cruel to say so, but the missed penalty on his debut seemed a harbinger of things to come.

“It’s not gone how I would have liked,” Cole admitted to Liverpool’s official website. “I’m determined to be a success here,” Cole said. “I’m working hard every day. The main thing is the club – it’s all about Liverpool.” Being one of the most popular, talented English players, he is not alone in wishing for a well-deserved change of fortune.
