Manchester City Daily – Given facing three months on sidelines but Silva’s going nowhere

Goalkeeper Shay Given could be facing three months on the sidelines after a specialist confirmed on Wednesday that he will require surgery after a recurrence of an old shoulder injury. The lay-off effectively ends the Republic of Ireland international’s season (and possibly his City career), one in which he has had to play second fiddle to Joe Hart and has made only four appearances.

“Shay has a problem in his shoulder and he will need three months to recover,” said boss Roberto Mancini. “It is the same injury he had last season and he must have an operation.”

The Blues also have other injury problems ahead of the Europa League second-leg tie with Aris Salonika on Thursday. Defender Micah Richards will miss the game after picking up a calf strain, along with recent absentees James Milner, Nigel de Jong and Adam Johnson. The good news is that Mario Balotelli is fit after suffering a head injury in the FA Cup replay with Notts County, and Shaun Wright-Phillips should also be available having shaken off a back problem.
