Man Utd news – Utd in for Douglas Costa, Berbatov in Juventus link, Fergie praises character

Fergie praises character.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised his team’s ‘character’ after their last gasp winner against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

“That is what the character of this club is all about,” said Ferguson. “No other club in the country has got that. We are fantastic at getting something out of a dead situation.”

The victory coupled with Arsenal’s failure to beat West Brom means the Red Devil’s are now 5 points clear at the top of the league, and Ferguson was eager to praise his players after a difficult few weeks.

“It has been a hard programme and the lads deserve a lot of praise for that. This was not a 100% top performance from us but we never gave in.”

Berbatov in Juventus link.

Italian giants Juventus are the latest club to be linked with a move for striker Dimitar Berbatov as contract negotiations with United appear to have ground to a halt, accordin to The Sun.

The Bulgarian forward, who sealed United’s victory on Saturday with his 88th minute strike has been in fine form this season, netting 20 league goals. However the player wants a three-year extension and a wage rise to around £140,000 a week with United only offering to add two years to his current deal, which expires in 2012.

The Italian club have reportedly spoken to Berbatov’s agent as he continues to grow increasingly frustrated at being left out of the side in favour of Javier Hernandez.

Utd in for Douglas Costa.

Manchester United are set to renew their interest in Brazilian wonderkid Douglas Costa, 18 months since a deal for the player fell through.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Ferguson is keen to sign the 20-year-old as a long-term replacement for veteran midfielder Paul Scholes. Douglas Costa currently plays for Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, who have just been drawn against Barcelona in the last 8 of the Champions League.

Ferguson has been promised substantial funds to strengthen his squad in the summer, but the United manager is already struggling to secure a replacement for goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, who retires at the end of the season.
