Smalling confident ahead Chelsea clash

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is looking forward to his side’s Champions League quarter-final tie with Chelsea on Wednesday night, and insists he has nothing to prove to his doubters.

Smalling, 21, joined United in January 2010, and has seen his playing time increase this season with the regular absence of Rio Ferdinand through injury.

And the England U21 international is looking forward to playing in the biggest game of his career so far.

Talking to Sky Sports, Smalling said: “To be able to play in these latter stages of the Champions League is what most players in the world would dream to be part of. I can’t wait to play my part. I’ve managed to be involved, play games and keep my momentum going. I don’t feel I’ve got anything to prove.

“Even when we played at their place they didn’t create too many chances. We’re going into Wednesday with a lot of confidence, and so we should.”

It remains to be seen if Smalling will start in mid-week after the Daily Mail reported that Ferdinand may make a surprise return to the starting line-up.
