Wenger blames referee for Liverpool late goal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was angry with the match officials after his side conceded a 98th minute penalty to Liverpool in their 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium today.

Arsenal took the lead in the 96th minute when Cesc Fabregas was fouled by Jay Spearing, and Robin van Persie converted. However, in the remaining injury time, Eboue felled Lucas and Dirk Kuyt gained an unlikely equaliser with the last kick of the game.

Talking to Sky Sports, Wenger felt the referee, Andre Marriner, had played too much extra added time: “Liverpool defended and defended, we had to throw everything at them… We were hard-done-by because the injury time had finished… extra-time was eight minutes.”

Wenger also felt that the tackle by Eboue on Lucas to gain the penalty, was not a foul: “I don’t think it was a penalty, lucas stopped his run in front of him.”

The defeat makes an Arsenal title challenge unlikely, as Manchester United now move to 1/10 odds on to win the Premier League trophy.
