Derby County manager Nigel Clough has dismissed “ridiculous” rumours that Manchester United striker Michael Owen is close to signing for the Championship side.
Media reports in recent days claimed Owen was prepared to snub a number of interested Premier League clubs, in favour of a £1.5m package to take him to Pride Park.
However, talking to BBC Radio Derby, Clough ruled out a move for Owen, and said he would be concentrating mainly on Championship players:
“There are silly names going to be bandied around but we’ve identified our targets and we are working on them. Some are going to be more ridiculous than others and certainly Michael Owen fits into that category.
“The majority of the players we are talking about are from Championship clubs, we have done our work in the lower leagues in the last couple of seasons and bought potential but we have stated in the last few months that the players now have to be established Championship players and that’s where they’ll come from.”
