Celtic news – McFadden interest cools, Lawwell dig at Premier League, Given unsure on Hoops

Lawwell dig at Premier League.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has aimed a dig at the Premiership by insisting it is now the “English and Welsh Premier League” after Swansea City´s recent promotion.

Lawwell, an advocate of the Hoops leaving the SPL to compete down south, finds it ironic Wales now boasts a Premiership club after both Celtic and Rangers had previously enquired about the possibility but were denied access.

“It is interesting to see Swansea are now in the English Premier League” he told the Daily Record. “So it´s now the English and Welsh Premier League and that´s an interesting twist.

“From Celtic’s point of view we have a responsibility to maximise the potential of our club and will look at anything which allows us to do that.

“In the meantime we will play in the SPL and hopefully emerge dominant and re-establish ourselves in the Champions League.”

McFadden interest cools.

The Glasgow Evening Times says Celtic are set to distance themselves from any move for fit-again Scotland international James McFadden this summer.

The 28-year-old Birmingham City midfielder, recently linked with a switch to Parkhead, has hesitated over signing a new deal and was thought to be receptive to the idea of a return north of the border to play for his boyhood heroes.

However, despite the Midlands club having an option to trigger a clause in the player´s contract should they wish to sell him, the Glasgow giants already have a close-season signing policy in place and an attacking midfielder is not a priority for them.

Given unsure on Hoops.

Manchester City´s Shay Given is still undecided if he will be with the club next season despite being linked with a recent move to Celtic, reports Sky Sports News.

The Republic of Ireland shotstopper played second fiddle to Joe Hart last season but with City finally moving in the right direction is not so eager to leave Eastlands.

Speaking about Celtic, he said: “I said last week when I was away with Ireland that it’s a fantastic club, with great history and great supporters, but it´s purely speculation at the minute and I don´t really know about it.

“[Celtic coach] Alan Thompson is on on the same course as me at the moment so he’s been giving me a bit of earache. It’s too early to say but it is a fantastic club,” he added.
