Liverpool news – Downing in Reds hint, Saric to exit, Gerrard wants to overturn Utd

Downing in Reds hint.

Liverpool target Stewart Downing has been pictured allegedly holding a Liverpool scarf with Reds forward Andy Carroll, The Mirror reports.

The 26 year old Villa wideman has not yet committed his future at Villa Park and reports have suggested that he could be on his way to Anfield. The picture did the rounds on Twitter last night and even though a Villa spokesman has denied the legitimacy in the photo, there are still heavy rumours over whether Downing will be at Villa next season.

New Villa manager Alex McLeish said recently that he wants to keep Downing at the club, but Downing has already stated that he wants to play at a bigger club and a club that can guarantee European football, something which Liverpool are striving to do next season. The Reds would have to increase their valuation of the former Middlesbrough man, as Villa have set a £20m offer on Downing’s head and are unlikely to budge from that fee.

Saric to exit.

Young Danish striker Nikola Saric has been released by Liverpool and is ready to sign with Croatian side Hadjuk Split, Sky Sports reports.

Saric has described his three years at Anfield as ‘pure hell’ and did not make a single first team appearance since his move in the summer of 2008. Barcelona and Tottenham had made moves for the young striker back in 2008, but Liverpool pipped all clubs to his signature.

During his time, Saric only played in the reserves and Liverpool have decided to release him from the club after choosing not to offer him a new deal. His agent has commented on the move, claiming that there are no problems with a move away from Anfield.

Predrag Saric, Nikola’s agent and father, said: ‘Everything is going according to plan and there are no more obstacles for Nikola to move to Hadjuk. In the next few days, he will sign for the next three years. He is ready to move on after three years of pure hell at Anfield’.

Gerrard wants to overturn Utd.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is hopeful that the spending of the Reds can match them up to current Premier League champions Manchester United, The Guardian reports.

The Reds have not won the league since 1990 and have had to watch Manchester United race to 19 league titles and knock off Liverpool’s title record in the process. Gerrard is rehabilitating in Portugal following his groin injury in March and says he will be ready for pre-season. His focus when he returns is on the league and challenging for trophies immediately.

Gerrard said: ‘As a Liverpool fan and player, it’s frustrating when you see your arch-rivals lifting trophies. Now the challenge for us is to equalise. We’ve got to make sure we’ve got a squad capable of going into the season and competing with Manchester United. It’s exciting times. It’s important this team delivers very soon, because we’ve been a number of seasons without putting a trophy in the cabinet.’
