David N’Gog’s proposed transfer to Sunderland has been held up, due to the wage demands of the French striker, the Liverpool Echo reports.
The Frenchman was expected to complete a £4m transfer to the North East, but Sunderland have not been able to agree personal terms with the striker just yet. The Wearsiders have revealed that they cannot match the wages N’Gog is currently on at Liverpool and will be hoping that the 22 year old will reduce his demands in exchange for regular first team football.
N’Gog cost the Reds £1.4m three years ago and has scored 19 goals in 94 appearances for the club. He is now surplus to requirements at Anfield with the January signings of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll moving N’Gog to the bench and now the interest for Ipswich striker Connor Wickham has paved the way for an exit from Liverpool for N’Gog.

Reds still keen on Downing.
The Daily Mirror reports that Liverpool are still keen to sign Aston Villa and England midfielder Stewart Downing, but have not met Villa’s valuation at the moment.
Liverpool are rumoured to have tabled a £15m bid for the 26 year old to prize him away from Villa Park, but Villa chairman Randy Lerner is holding out for £18m. Downing still has two years left on his current contract at Villa Park, but is keen on a move away from the club to gain regular European football with a top club.
Villa are not keen to let Downing go without a fight with new Villa boss Alex McLeish speaking out on the situation, saying that the former Middlesbrough man is a top player and ‘no chance do we want Stewart Downing to go’.
The Reds have alternative options if the Downing deal is set to become difficult. There is reported interest in Wigan winger Charles N’Zogbia and St. Etienne midfielder Dimitri Payet, but Downing is said to remain the top midfield target for Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish.
Meireles exit open.
Liverpool have rejected Juventus’ offer of cash plus Brazilian midfielder Felipe Melo for Reds midfielder Raul Meireles, but have told the Serie A giants that they can have Meireles for £13.5m.
The Daily Mirror reports that the Reds are not interested in signing Melo, but would be inclined to accepting a straight cash bid from Juventus. Meireles was signed for £10.7m last summer from Porto and impressed heavily towards the latter end of the season under Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish.
Reds fans may be alarmed at the news that Liverpool are considering selling Meireles, but Dalglish’s theory is that he has plenty of cover in midfield. Despite the substantial transfer fund that the Scotsman has been handed by Liverpool chairman John W. Henry, Dalglish may have to keep the books balanced by offloading some players.
Meireles could be sold along with fellow midfielders Christian Poulsen, Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani, as Dalglish holds interest in signing Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam.
