Liverpool news – Reds want Silvestre, Henderson the new Gerrard, Comolli promises more signings

Henderson the new Gerrard.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes that Jordan Henderson can follow in his footsteps. The Liverpool Echo reports that Gerrard hopes Henderson will be a shrewd acquisition for manager Kenny Dalglish in Liverpool’s race for the top four next season.

Gerrard said: ‘It’s a really positive signing. Liverpool needs a new Steven Gerrard and it will need a new Jamie Carragher. That’s what good football clubs do.’ Gerrard has first-hand experience with Henderson last November, having played with the 20 year old midfielder for England in the friendly against France, and claims that Henderson is ‘a good player with energy’.

The last game Gerrard played for Liverpool was a March 6th victory over Manchester United at Anfield, after which he underwent surgery to solve a long-standing groin problem. The Reds skipper will be back in pre-season training at Liverpool’s Melwood training complex and looking forward to taking his place in the first team once again.

Comolli promises more signings.

Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli has promised fans many more signings this summer, The Mirror reports. Comolli also insists that the club will be trying to buy the best of British talent.

Manager Kenny Dalglish is looking to assemble a squad of players that can realistically challenge for the title next season and he has the full backing of the board with Comolli ready to spend whatever it takes to acquire talented footballers with massive promise.

Comolli said: ‘If a player is English, or British or has played in the Premier League, we’ll look at that over someone abroad. It could be any nationality as long as they tick the boxes and is what we need for this window and going forward.’

Reported transfer targets for Liverpool include Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam, Aston Villa wideman Stewart Downing, Arsenal left back Samir Nasri and Barcelona forward Bojan, all players who Liverpool have a great chance in signing this summer.

Reds want Silvestre.

Catania have claimed that Liverpool are interested in signing their defender Matias Silvestre, Sky Sports reports.

The 26 year old Argentine arrived at the Serie A side from Argentinian giants Boca Juniors in January 2008 and has impressed with his assured performances in the Catania defence. General manager of the club Pietro Lo Monaco has already admitted that Silvestre could make a move to a bigger club and Liverpool have been linked with the defender.

Lo Monaco said: ‘I’d struggle to keep him here, considering what a great player he is. There are two Italian clubs tracking him, but Liverpool and Villarreal are also interested in Silvestre’.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has been looking for some defensive talent to keep his side watertight for next season’s challenge. However, a left back is said to be the main priority for the Scotsman with Newcastle defender Jose Enrique one of his main targets.
