Usmanov increases Arsenal ownership share

Alisher Usmanov’s Red & White Holdings Limited has increased its shareholding in Arsenal beyond the 29 per cent mark. The Uzbek born Russian businessman is the second biggest shareholder in the club behind American Stan Kroenke, whose holding has increased to 66.1 per cent amid a takeover bid.

Red and White Holdings Company announced in a statement on the London Stock Exchange’s Regulatory News Service: ‘Red & White Securities Limited (‘Red & White) today announces that it now holds a stake of over 29 per cent in Arsenal Holdings plc (‘Arsenal’).’

Usmanov who has diverse interests including stakes in precious metals, iron ore, steel, natural gas and media companies, moved into the football world in August 2007 by acquiring a 14.58% stake in Arsenal FC. Earlier this year he had refused to sell his shares to Stan Kroenke claiming a “love” for Arsenal, despite the fact that his bid for outright ownership of the club was seemingly over. He is still to get a place in Arsenal’s directors’ box.
