Van der Vaart happy with first season at Tottenham

Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart has told of his pleasure at how his first season with the club has gone.

The Dutch international, who signed for Spurs in a deadline-day £8m deal from Real Madrid, has scored 15 goals in all competitions, and helped Tottenham reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, beating Inter and AC Milan in the process.

“I couldn’t have really imagined it would have gone as well as it did”, he told the official Tottenham website. “I had a great season. You have your ups and downs but at the end I scored 15 goals, the team played well, and it was a great Champions League season.”

Spurs ended the season six points adrift of fourth-place Arsenal, but Rafa does not see this season as a failure, and does not regret his move to the Premier League: “Of course it’s a pity that we didn’t finish in the top four but we had a great season. So I’m a happy man and it was a nice first year.

“The Premier League is the biggest in the world. Everybody in every country sees our games and that’s a nice thing. As a player you want to show what you can do to the whole world so it has been an important move for me.”
