Wigan midfielder James McCarthy is a target for Arsenal this summer as they look to strengthen their current squad, according to the Metro.
Arsenal have made two signings this summer in young defender Carl Jenkinson and Ivorian forward Gervinho, but lost left back Gael Clichy to Manchester City and could lose midfielders Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas this summer. The Gunners have enquired about the availability of the 20 year old Irishman, who was one of the star performers last season as Wigan just about survived in the Premier League.
The Latics will be desperate to hold on to McCarthy, especially after losing French midfielder Charles N’Zogbia joined Aston Villa in a £9.5m move earlier this week, but the idea of playing Champions League football with the Gunners could sway McCarthy to make the switch to London.
McCarthy arrived at the DW Stadium from Scottish side Hamilton Academicals for over £1m in 2009 and has broken into the Republic of Ireland national side and the Wigan first team in his time in the North West.

Barca sure of Fabregas deal.
Barcelona vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu has insisted that Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas will be a Barca player by the end of next month, the Daily Mirror reports.
Arsenal are still refusing to budge from their £40m valuation of the player, despite Barca’s offers and Fabregas’ apparent desire to return home. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has publicly stated that his captain is going nowhere, but Bartomeu has made it clear that the Spanish champions can see one possible result in this long-running transfer saga.
At the unveiling of new Barca signing Alexis Sanchez, the Nou Camp vice-president said: ‘It is a sure thing that we will make one more signing. Sanchez was always our number one target. Fabregas was always number two. We are discreet and prefer not to talk about signings, but we have time until August 30th to make sure some things happen and I can tell you they will’.
Wenger has become infuriated with the way Barcelona have handled the transfer in the media and has accused the Catalonia based side of tapping up his 24 year old skipper.
No Mata bid.
Valencia president Manuel Llorente has stated that the club have yet to receive a bid for Arsenal target Juan Mata, the Daily Mail reports.
The 23 year old has been on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger’s transfer list this summer and he is looking to bring in the Spaniard in case Samir Nasri leaves the Emirates Stadium. Llorente had ruled out selling Mata this summer, but the financial troubles at Valencia may result in the sale of the Spanish international. No clubs have made a bid for Mata however and Llorente stil intends to keep hold of one of his best players.
Llorente said: ‘There’s nothing with Mata. He is a Valencia player and today, there is no offer or negotiation. The club’s intention is not to sell.’
Unai Emery, manager at Valencia, has not completely backed up his president’s comments and stated that a move for Mata could not be ruled out, due to the economic and sporting situations the club find themselves in.
