Atletico Madrid have reportedly made an offer to Real Sociedad for well-publicised target Antoine Griezmann.
French Under-21 international Griezmann has risen to prominence with the Basque side Sociedad in the last two seasons, with some dynamic and exciting displays, and crucially through new Atleti Coach Gregorio Manzano’s eyes, from a number of positions.
Able to play on both wings or in a second striker role, the 20-year-old scored seven goals last term and has been identified by Manzano as an ideal creative point for his restructuring at the Estadio Vicente Calderon. Former Mallorca and Sevilla Coach Manzano is thought interested in using Griezmann on the left wing to balance out Jose Antonio Reyes on the right, in a 4-3-3 system.
Where Griezmann earlier this week publicly welcomed the chance of a switch to the capital, AS now understands negotiations have begun, with Atleti placing a cash-plus-players offer to his San Sebastian owners. With the player’s buy-out clause set at €30m, and with the Rojiblancos already listing a high number of midfielders on their books, they are pushing for a lower €7m bid, and Raul Garcia and Fran Merida added to the deal.
Atletico today also confirmed the re-capture of Tiago Mendes on a two-year deal after Juventus cancelled the last 12 months of his contract with them. The Portuguese midfielder had spent the last 18 months on loan at the Calderon, and was widely expected to stay in Spain.
