Barcelona ponder Capdevila for Maxwell swap

Barcelona have not ruled out the possibility of replacing left-back Maxwell with Villarreal´s Joan Capdevila if the Brazilian decides to leave the Camp Nou this summer.

Maxwell, who has found it difficult to gain a regular spot in Pep Guardiola´s starting line-up since a €4.5m move from Inter Milan in July, 2009, has been linked with moves to both AC Milan and Manchester City. However, he could now figure in Barcelona´s bid to sign Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal as Gunners´ boss Arsene Wenger needs to replace Gael Clichy after the Frenchman´s transfer to Manchester City. With Everton demanding an elevated price for Wenger´s first-choice, Leighton Baines, Maxwell could well turn out to be a more suitable alternative.

Barcelona have already made known their interest in Capdevila as the Spanish World Cup winner does not feature in Villarreal boss Juan Carlos Garrido´s plans for next season. The 33-year-old signed a two-year extension to his contract only last January, yet it is thought he now has an agreement with the Yellow Submarine that he can leave if a club comes in for him; hence, La Blaugrana will try to negotiate a reduced fee or possibly even a free transfer.
