La Liga pre-season round-up: Real Madrid, Malaga and Valencia win as Barcelona only draw

Pre-season action continued this weekend with several La Liga sides in action on Saturday, with generally good results gained.

Real Madrid made it a clean sweep of victories on their US tour with a win at Philadelphia Union and they now return to Europe to continue preparations. Back in Spain, Malaga CF also continued their winning ways with a 1-0 win at Xerez CD.

In Croatia, an under strength Barcelona dominated but could not find the net in a 0-0 draw against Hajduk Split, who were celebrating their centenary this week. Real Betis were defeated 2-0 in France but put in a decent performance against a Bordeaux side that had started training two weeks before and were already playing their fifth friendly.

Jonathan De Guzman caught the eye and with an impressive performance and a superbly taken free-kick as Real Mallorca won 2-0 in Holland in what was their first pre-season win. Valencia squeezed past Sven Goran Eriksson’s Leicester with a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Jonas to lift the Karnten Cup.

Real Sociedad eased passed newly-promoted Corsicans AC Ajaccio with a comfortable 4-0 home win thanks to goals from Mikel Labaka, Imanol Agirretxe and a second half brace from Paco Sutil.

In Holland, Getafe also faced a recently promoted side, but the Madrid side’s technical superiority saw them ease past OH Leuven with a convincing 4-0 win. Elsewhere, Sporting Gijon had an easy run-out against their B team and Levante UD secured a 1-1 draw in Belgium after playing most of the match with 10 men following the early dismissal of Farina.
