Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique could move to Liverpool before the start of the new Premier League season, according to the People.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield and Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is believed to have made signing a left back his top priority before the new season. Reports last week suggested that Dalglish was prepared to wait patiently for Enrique, but defensive frailties in the previous two friendlies against Hull City and Galatasaray have forced Dalglish into immediate action.
Liverpool face competition from Arsenal to sign the Magpies’ defender, but the Reds are expected to be the frontrunners for Enrique’s signature. Enrique has 12 months left on his current Newcastle contract and is desperate on a move away from St. James’ Park, criticising the club’s transfer policy on social networking site Twitter and indicating that he is not intending on signing a new deal.

New Liverpool signing Charlie Adam cannot wait to get started at Anfield and is determined to help the club win trophies again, Sky Sports reports.
The Scotland international cost the Reds £7m from Blackpool and is one of four signings made so far by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish. Dalglish is looking to revive the club’s fortunes and build on a promising second half of last season, which Adam thinks will help the club return to winning ways.
Adam said: ‘I can’t wait to get started and hopefully this will be a successful period in my career and the club’s history. At the end of the day, you can get judged on trophies and as a footballer, you want to win as many as you can. The club has had a lot of success over the years, so let’s get back to doing that.’
Adam has also stressed that the competition for places in midfield can only result in the club’s improvement and predicts that Liverpool will be able to do big things this season.
Gerrard injury set-back.
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will miss the start of the new season after suffering an infection in a long-standing groin problem.
The 31-year-old underwent groin surgery after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester United in March and hasn’t kicked a football since March. Gerrard was expected to be ready for the start of the season, but the infection has resulted in his comeback being delayed by a month.
Liverpool released an official statement on their website which read: ‘Steven Gerrard today began a course of antibiotic treatement for an infection related to an ongoing groin problem. He is expected to remain in hospital for several days while the precautionary procedure is completed.
‘The player will then return to Melwood to continue his rehabilitation programme and is expected to be available for selection in September’, the statement continued. Liverpool’s season begins on August 13th against Sunderland and Gerrard is expected to be ready for Liverpool’s 11th September fixture against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
