Former Manchester United midfielder David Beckham has laughed off suggestions that Manchester City could usurp United as the prominent side in Manchester, ESPN reports.
Beckham will come into contact with City on Saturday for a friendly with his current side LA Galaxy. Having finished third in the Premier League and winning the FA Cup, City are tipped to overcome United’s reign of dominance in Manchester and forge their own path. Beckham has admitted that City are a force in the top flight, but he has told fans of the club that they need to realise how good Manchester United have and will continue to be.
The 36-year-old said: ‘I shouldn’t answer. They’re bringing good players in, they’ve got strong people with a lot of money behind them, so they’re going to improve. But they’ll never be Manchester United. They might be a threat this season, but United have got the history, the silverware over the last 20 years’.
Beckham also said there’s one team in Manchester, which is likely to rile City fans, but Beckham’s allegiances to the Old Trafford side are bound to sculpt his views towards the opposite half of the city. During his ten year career at Old Trafford, Beckham made over 250 appearances and scored 63 goals, winning a Champions League trophy and six Premier League titles.

Ashley Young says he is happy with life at Manchester United since his summer move from Aston Villa, The Guardian reports.
The winger has played in both American tour friendlies for the Red Devils so far this summer and is enjoying everything about the Premier League champions. Young is managing to cope with the expose that United face wherever they go and is delighted to be a part of one of the biggest clubs in world football.
Young said: ‘I am just delighted to be here and get myself on the pitch. No disrespect for the Villa boys, but as soon as I heard of Manchester United, I just wanted to get the deal done and start training. I can play left, right, off the front or as a main striker, so I just have to concentrate on my own game and wherever I am picked, do myself justice’.
Young played a prominent role in a 7-0 win for United over MLS side Seattle Sounders with Wayne Rooney scoring a hat trick and the rest of the goals coming from Michael Owen, Mame Biram Diouf, Park Ji-Sung and Gabriel Obertan.
Jones: I’ll take chance.
New Manchester United defender Phil Jones has joined up with his new teammates for the pre-season tour of America and is relishing the prospect to move to America, MUTV reports.
Jones was given extended leave by the Red Devils after his summer with the England under 21 squad at the European Championships, but is back now and ready to fight for his spot in the side. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he had to convince Jones that he would get regular first team football at the club and Jones now knows that he has the chance to do great things as part of the Old Trafford side.
‘I’m training and playing with top-class players day in and day out. I know there’s competition for places. It’s up for grabs in every position and it’s only healthy with the squad. I’ve got to keep training hard, working my way up. Eventually, I’ll get my chance and I’ll take it’, the former Blackburn defender said.
