Joining on loan, the 19-year-old is thought to be one of the most promising between the sticks in the European game, and in facing the Spanish Press, compared his style of play to Edwin van der Sar and Iker Casillas.
The youngster was signed by Premier League runners-up Chelsea after progressing through Genk’s youth system and impressing in the Belgian League last season. Named the League’s Goalkeeper of the Year and the Genk’s Player of the Year for last term, Courtois was called up to the Belgian national team this summer.
He arrives at the Vicente Calderon on a season-long loan, and faces competition from Joel Robles and Sergio Asenjo for the No 1 shirt, competition he has said he is relishing and is looking forward to proving his worth against in training. Standing at 6ft6, he is two inches taller than David De Gea, who departed Atletico earlier this summer.
