USA international striker Altidore leaves Villarreal

Villarreal have reached agreement with Dutch club AZ Alkmaar for the €1.5m transfer of striker Jozy Altidore, who will sign a four-year contract.

The USA international joined the Yellow Submarine in June, 2008 for €7.5m from MLS side New York Red Bulls but never quite established himself at El Madrigal, his nine appearances yielding just one goal, a last-minute strike against Athletic Bilbao which saw him become the first American to score in La Liga.

Altidore, 21, was subsequently loaned to Xerez, Hull City and Bursaspor and having now decided to try his luck in the Eredivisie, he told the Boston Herald: “For me it’s about the environment. It’s really essential. I think I’m at the age where I have a lot of experience now, I’ve played in a lot of places, I’ve played against top competition around the world. So I think it’s important to me now to go to a place where I can put that on display. That’s what I’m going to do. That’s what I’m hoping for.”
