Advances made in La Liga strike talks after marathon meeting but still no agreement

The representatives of the Spanish Footballers´ Association (AFE) and the Spanish League (LFP) have still not reached agreement over the strike which has halted the start of the 2011/12 La Liga season. After a marathon meeting at LFP headquarters in Madrid, which began at 4pm on Wednesday and ended more than 12 hours later at almost 5am, it was confirmed that there was no still no collective agreement between the sides.

The strike called by the AFE on August 11 that prevented the first round of league fixtures from being played is now set to spill over into the weekend of August 27-29, when the second round of games is scheduled to take place. Hence, the new season will not start until the second week in September as the first is reserved for international matches.
