Thiago 25, Fabregas 45, Sanchez 47, Messi 52, 75
Villarreal could have played incredibly on Monday night and still lost as an imperious Barcelona performance sunk the Yellow Submarine with a 5-0 victory. Prodigious midfielder Thiago Alcantara opened the scoring in the 25th minute after charging unchallenged through the visitors’ half before shooting left-footed from 20 yards.
Cesc Fabregas was up next as he finished off an intelligent move to round Diego Lopez and slot home, whilst another new signing, Alexis Sanchez, grabbed his first La Liga goal moments after half-time as he shot across Lopez after a neat lobbed pass ball by Thiago.
Lionel Messi added his name to the scoreboard in the 52nd minute in almost identical circumstances to Fabregas’ strike as he rounded the goalkeeper, whilst he also completed the rout 23 minutes later as he got on the end of a cross-goal pass by Thiago. The signs are ominous for the rest of La Liga.
Barcelona (3-4-3): Valdes; Busquets, Mascherano, Abidal; Fabregas (Jonathan 70), Thiago, Iniesta (Xavi 56); Sanchez, Messi, Pedro (Villa 67)
Villarreal (4-4-2): Diego Lopez; Zapata, Gonzalo, Musacchio, Oriol; Borja Valero (Camunas 50), Marchena, Bruno, Cani (Wakaso 59); Rossi, Nilmar (Senna 56)
Did you know…This result was the biggest margin of defeat Villarreal have ever suffered against Barcelona in La Liga.
