Chelsea news – Blues eye Fernando, Drogba to start ahead of Torres, New Modric bid to be rejected

Blues eye Fernando.

Sky Italia is reporting that new Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is considering a return to his old club FC Porto for the defensive midfielder Fernando. The 24 year old Brazilian has been at the Portuguese Champions since 2007 and has established himself as a regular starter, and apparently played some of his best football under Villas-Boas.

Several Italian clubs, including Juventus and Inter Milan have been rumoured to be interested in Fernando but may be deterred from following up after Porto placed a €15 million price tag on the midfielder. The price would not be an issue for Chelsea who are looking for a replacement for the injured Michael Essien, out for a minimum of six months.

Chelsea signed Oriol Romeu from Barcelona who can play in midfield but is primarily a defender, Fernando offers more experience and competition for Jon Obi Mikel who appears never to have quite convinced at Stamford Bridge.
