Fernando Gago set for Roma switch

Fernando Gago’s agent, Marcelo Lombilla, has told Gazzetta dello Sport that Roma and Real Madrid have reached agreement for the transfer of the 25-year-old midfielder on a season-long loan, with the Italians holding a €6m option to buy the player at the end of it.

“Real Madrid have told me they have reached agreement with Roma but there is still nothing official,” said Lombilla. “We are awaiting a call from Mr. Sabatini, Roma’s director of football.”

Hours earlier, Italian agent and intermediary Ernesto Bronzetti told Tele Radio Stereo 92.7: “At this moment, with one day to go until the end of the transfer market, Gago will play with Roma, provided the Italians complete the deal.”

He added: “I have spoken to Gago´s agent, who is in Madrid with the player, and it seems Real have realised the only way to ensure his exit to send him on loan. He had the opportunity to play in England but when he heard of Roma’s interest he didn’t want to consider any other option.”

While everything looks set for the Argentine to go to the Stadio Olimpico, there could be a further twist on the final day of the market with Palermo ready to step in should there be any last-minute hitches.
