Injury blow for Mallorca as Nunes faces season on sidelines

Real Mallorca captain Jose Nunes has been ruled out of action for six to eight months after rupturing the cruciate ligament in his right knee. The 34-year-old picked up the injury in the first minute of the recent Trofeu Ciutat de Palma clash with Napoli.

The injury was not thought to be serious at first and initial tests indicated that he would be missing for about eight weeks. However, further examination by the club doctors has revealed the true extent of the damage, meaning the inspirational Portuguese defender could miss most if not all of the coming season.

Club officials will now spring into action and begin the search for an additional central defender before the close of the transfer window. In the mean time they must fend off the advances of Valencia who are keen to prize Ivan Ramis away from the Islanders. Losing Ramis would leave Los Bermellones seriously exposed at the back with the new season fast approaching and limited time available to find a suitable replacement.
