Liverpool are eyeing two recruits from the Bundesliga to shore up their problematic defence so far this pre-season, The Liverpool Daily Post reports.
Centre-back Per Mertesacker is reportedly the subject of an £8m offer from Reds manager Kenny Dalglish. The 26 year old has won 75 international caps for Germany and is in the last year of his contract with Werder Bremen, so a move could be possible this summer. The Bundesliga side will be prepared to cash in on the player instead of possibly losing him on a free next summer.
Dortmund central defender Neven Subotic is also a target for Dalglish after an impressive season, which saw Dortmund lift the Bundesliga trophy. The Serbian defender is keen to move into the Premier League, but with Dortmund playing Champions League football this season, a move to Anfield may not be on the cards with the Reds’ lack of European football this term.

Dalglish: Don’t heckle Jordan.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has told Sunderland fans that they should not heckle the Reds’ summer signing Jordan Henderson, The Guardian reports.
The Reds host the Black Cats on the opening day of the Premier League and Henderson left Sunderland in a £16m switch to Anfield this summer. Now, Dalglish is concerned that the Black Cats fans will give Henderson a rough ride and has urged them that they should respect their former player. The England under 21 midfielder wanted to leave Sunderland and Dalglish has told Sunderland fans to be ‘philosophical’ over the move.
Dalglish said: ‘Jordan is one they’ve lost. He’s a good player who they would have been understandably reluctant to let go. But sometimes as a manager, you’ve got to be philosophical and say if a player wants to go, we should let him leave. I don’t think (Sunderland fans) will have any animosity towards Jordan. Sunderland will be a difficult fixture.’
Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva insists that he is fit and ready for the start of the Premier League campaign, according to The Liverpool Daily Post.
The Brazilian midfielder made 47 appearances in all competitions for the Reds last season and his rejuvenation in form was one of the main benefactors in Liverpool’s charge up the Premier League table towards the latter half of the season. Lucas spent the summer in Argentina representing Liverpool in the Copa America and has only made one pre-season appearance for Liverpool, playing 45 minutes against Valencia on Saturday.
Lucas is likely to start against Steve Bruce’s Sunderland side on Saturday and has re-assured Liverpool fans that he is fit and healthy to become a major part of Kenny Dalglish’s side this season.
‘I’m fit. I didn’t have a full holiday and was training with the national team, so it won’t be a problem for me to be available for Saturday. I am really excited to be back and really looking forward to the new season. We’re in a good mood at the moment and hopefully, we’ll start well on Saturday’, Lucas added.
