Liverpool news – Keane: Reds “nowhere near title”, Carra backs Gerrard, Ayala set for Swans

Keane: Reds “nowhere near title”.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has told Liverpool fans that they should not get ahead of themselves, as their club will not win the league this season, The Daily Mail reports.

The former Red Devils captain was part of the 1998/99 treble winning side at Old Trafford and has dismissed his old rivals Liverpool from winning the Premier League. Keane spoke about the signings Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish had made and commented that whilst Dalglish was the right man for the job, they need more improvement to become champions.

Keane said: ‘Liverpool have bought attacking players, but I think it’s actually defenders that they need. I think we’ve seen that a little bit in pre-season. Don’t get carried away, Liverpool are in no position to win the league, nowhere near.’

The Irishman also commented that improving the Reds team and winning the Premiership are two different things and Liverpool need a few more years of improvement before they can worry his former side for the Premier League title.

Carra backs Gerrard.

Jamie Carragher has backed Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to prove that his quality is still brilliant to lead the Reds from the front, The Daily Express reports.

Gerrard underwent groin surgery towards the end of last term after a 3-1 victory over Manchester United and the 31 year old has now unluckily got an infected groin, which rules him out until the beginning of September. The Liverpool captain now faces competition for a place at Anfield with the summer signings of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam as well as the current Reds midfielders in Lucas, Jay Spearing and Raul Meireles.

Carragher has spent 15 years in the first team setup at Liverpool, after six years as a youth team player, and he has backed his long-standing teammate to come back stronger than ever. The 33 year old also said that Gerrard has plenty of time left before his career ends.

The former England international defender said: ‘When Stevie is back playing, it will be like we’ve just signed a great new player. He has still got four or five years ahead of him to play for Liverpool’.

Ayala set for Swans.

Daniel Ayala is set to snub a move to Championship side Hull City and join Premier League new-boys Swansea City, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds agreed a fee, believed to be in the region of £850,000, with the Tigers for the 20 year old and the Spaniard Ayala was expected to complete his move to the KC Stadium this week. Swansea matched the Hull bid at the last moment and are confident of bringing in Ayala before their opening Premier League fixture against Manchester City on Monday night.

Hull assistant boss Craig Shakespeare admits that he is unaware at where Ayala’s future lies and whether he will make the move up to Humberside. Shakespeare said: ‘We believe we have made a fair offer, but we’re not sure where Daniel and his agent see him next. We would love to have him back on board, but there is another club involved’.
