Liverpool news – Suarez to miss opener, Downing excited, Gerrard happy with signings

Suarez to miss opener.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish faces being without forward Luis Suarez for next week’s opening Premier League game against Sunderland, The Sun reports.

The striker will have only been back in training for five days and the season opener may come too soon for the Uruguayan, who has spent his summer bringing Copa America glory to his country. Suarez was named player of the tournament and Dalglish has no real concerns over Suarez’s fitness following the tournament.

Dalglish said: ‘Luis will be back next week and we will start thinking about him then. He’s had a fantastic summer and we’ll see how he is when he comes in. We can’t predict how he is going to be like, but he should be pretty happy with himself and pretty confident looking forward to the start of the season’.

Suarez signed for the Reds in January for £22.8m from Ajax and made a big impact on Liverpool fans, providing talismanic qualities to propel the Anfield side up to a sixth placed finish.

Downing excited.

New Liverpool signing Stewart Downing is ready to show Reds fans that he is worth his £20m valuation, The Liverpool Echo reports.

Downing could have joined the Reds in 2008 when he was at Middlesbrough and was heavily linked with a transfer to Merseyside, but then manager Rafa Benitez plumped for Albert Riera from Espanyol. Downing’s career has skyrocketed during his time at Villa Park and now as he joins the Reds, he is ready to show what qualities he has for Liverpool.

The 26 year old English international said: ‘I’m just so glad this opportunity came back around. As soon as I heard there was interest, I wanted to come here, especially with Kenny Dalglish being manager.

‘He wants players to respect this football club and do well for it. He has invested heavily to bring me here and I want to do well for him. There’s a great squad here and I’m looking forward to getting started’, Downing added.

Gerrard happy with signings.

Injured Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has hailed the quality of the summer signings made by Reds manager Kenny Dalglish, The Liverpool Echo writes.

The 31 year old is currently out of action until next month with an infected groin, but believes the acquisitions of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Alexander Doni will help his side start the season brightly and be in good form for Gerrard’s return. Today’s game against Spanish side Valencia will be the first time the new signings have graced the Anfield turf and Gerrard is ready for the competition in the side this season.

Gerrard said: ‘I believe we’ve made some very good signings this summer. Hopefully, there will be one or two more arriving before the transfer window closes. You always want competition for places, because it’s a long season’.

The Liverpool skipper added: ‘Obviously, it gives the manager more options and it also pushes the players on, because they know not everyone can start every game’. Liverpool have lightened their midfield load with the sale of Milan Jovanovic to Anderlecht and the impending exit of Alberto Aquilani to AC Milan or Fiorentina.
