Mallorca 1-0 Espanyol: De Guzman the difference in an even contest

Iberostar Estadi, Palma
De Guzman 62

Jonathan de Guzman emphasised just why Mallorca Coach Michael Laudrup is so keen to keep him at the club as he scored the decisive goal to secure all three points in a close match against Espanyol. The heavily-deflected strike came in the 62nd minute after a pass from Tomer Hemed and proved to be the difference between the two sides.

De Guzman has been linked with a move away from the club with Villarreal thought to be favourites to secure his services, and with the transfer deadline approaching it still remains to be seen if the Canadian-born midfielder will stay with the islanders.

Both sides looked comfortable in possession but Espanyol in particular looked short of ideas in the final third and, with the exception of a couple of close efforts from youngster Alvaro Vazquez, they were unable to cause any serious threat to the Mallorca goal after falling behind.
