Sevilla’s Fernando Navarro has spoken of the club’s intentions in 2011-12 to approach each game on the front foot.
The 29-year-old defender told AS that the team’s intentions under new Coach Marcelino Garcia Toral are to act as the protagonist in every game, and to take the game to their opponents. Attention since Marcelino’s arrival has been on the team’s style of play, with the Coach promising an attacking, ball-retention and high-pressing approach, and pre-season indicating the players are responding positively to his demands.
Former Barcelona youth player Navarro, who has been at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan since 2008, also looked to answer doubts about what could be interpreted as an over-attacking approach by pointing out that the team’s focus is to ‘defend together’, and that their strength going forward will be built from a solid defence.
Interestingly, where Marcelino has said it would be otherwise questionable for the Seville side not to find themselves fighting for Champions League qualification, Navarro admitted it would not be a failure should they miss out, but that such is their good work in pre-season and quality through the team, that it is their natural target.
