Giuseppe Rossi fired Villarreal to a 3-0 victory over Odense and into the group stages of the Champions League to see off a plucky Danish side that rode their luck at times during a one-sided opening spell.
The former Manchester United man, who has been linked with a move to Juventus this summer, eventually opened the scoring five minutes after the break then added a second on 66 minutes from Cani´s cross, much to the relief of boss Juan Carlos Garrido who was already under pressure before La Liga has even started following the shock 1-0 defeat in Denmark last week.
The visitors then saw Baskhim Kadrii dismissed for a second yellow card on 70 minutes and five minutes later he was followed by Villarreal´s Borja Valero, who was shown a straight red for headbutting an opponent in the chest. Carlos Marchena then completed the scoring nine minutes from time after a mistake from keeper Stefan Wessels, who had been in inspired form all evening.
Garrido, unsurprisingly, was very happy with his team´s showing:
Opposition boss Henrik Clausen was left to reflect on his side´s elimination: “It was a shame after the effort we put in but it was not to be,” lamented the Dane. “I feel sorry for our people, who deserve some success.”
