Tottenham Hotspur are expected to open talks with Athletic Bilbao over a move for striker Fernando Llorente, according to the Metro.
Bilbao visit White Hart Lane for a friendly this weekend and Spurs representatives are eagerly waiting to meet Bilbao representatives to thrash out a deal for the Spaniard. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been in contact with Bilbao over the move, but will wait until the Spanish side are in London before doing business.
26 year old Llorente is currently valued at £17.5m and Spurs are eager to find a top goalscorer before the start of the season. Redknapp’s advances towards Mirko Vucinic were snubbed by Roma and Vucinic joined Juventus earlier this week. The bright lights of the Premier League offer a perfect opportunity to develop his career and Spurs could use his goalscoring records. Llorente scored 19 goals in 38 appearances last season.

No Afellay move.
Spurs have been told to forget about signing Barcelona winger Ibrahim Afellay amid rumours of a move from Spurs for the Dutch wideman, talkSPORT reports.
Tottenham have been interested in the Dutch international star all summer and were reportedly lining up a bid for Afellay. The 25 year old has found it difficult to break into the starting line up at the Nou Camp and was rumoured to be seeking a move away to either Spurs, Liverpool or Italian giants Juventus.
Afellay’s agent Robert Jansen has spoken about the interest involving his side and has dismissed a move for the Dutchman away from the Nou Camp.
Jansen said: ‘Afellay will remain in Spain, because he is happy at Barcelona. It is normal to receive calls from clubs about players, but they do not amount to much, because Barcelona have no doubts about the future of the player’.
Thorstvedt questions Friedel signing.
Former Tottenham goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt has questioned the Spurs decision to sign veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel this summer, talkSPORT reports.
Thorstvedt has backed goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes to remain the club’s number one and the signing of the 40 year old Friedel has left his baffled. The Norwegian goalkeeper made over 200 appearances for Spurs between 1989 and 1996 and won a lot of fans at the club with his shot-stopping prowess.
The Norwegian said: ‘I didn’t quite understand the Brad Friedel signing. If you need a third goalie and he’s free and available then fair enough, but he’s over 40? It would be a strange thing for Tottenham to buy a new no. 1 who is already over 40.’
Thorstvedt added: ‘I would definitely go with Gomes (as first choice). I’m a big fan of his, he does so many great things. Last season was not his best – he made some big mistakes, glaring mistakes – and you want a goalie who doesn’t make many mistakes and that the defence can trust. But he also does some incredible things. He’s still a top, top goalkeeper and I think the defenders still have lots of faith in him’.
