After a busy transfer deadline day one of the more low-key deals was Bolton Wanderers’ move for Chelsea’s Gael Kakuta, on loan until January. The 20-year old Frenchman has the ability to play in a variety of attacking positions, including on the wings and as a striker, which gives Owen Coyle more options in attack.
After having seen both Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge complete successful loan spells at Bolton, Kakuta will have jumped at the chance to further his own development as he looks to break into the first team set up at Stamford Bridge. It is clear to see that Kakuta has a lot of potential and will be hoping that Coyle can do for him what he managed to do for both Wilshere and Sturridge.
Kakuta joined the Blues in 2007 and in his first season at the London club was been acclaimed for his obvious talent by winning the Academy Scholar of the Year award. He was also voted Academy Player of the Year after finishing as the top scorer in the youth side with 12 goals in 24 appearances.
Kakuta has played at all international youth levels for France, and with the U-19 squad at the 2010 European U-19 Championship, won the Golden Player award for his outstanding performances at the tournament which the team went on to win. However, Kakuta has had a tough time at Chelsea with a four month ban from football in 2009 for breaching his contract with former club Lens, and struggling to break into the first team.
His move to Bolton will be a welcome one. If anyone can get the best out of such an undoubtedly talented player it will be Coyle and he could prove to be a key peace of his Bolton puzzle. This move will surely be beneficial for both Kakuta, a player who former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti described as the future of the club, and Bolton who have been seeking to strengthen in attack.
Kakuta will now be competing for a place in the side with the likes of Kevin Davies, Tuncay, Ivan Klasnic and new signing David N’Gog, who joined from Liverpool on deadline day and is another welcome addition to Coyle’s attacking line-up, as he has openly sought for a new striker all summer. Fans can now rest assured that they have players in their squad who can score goals, and in Kakuta a player of enormous potential who may even go on to play a bigger role than expected.
