Chelsea star Mata eyes 2012 Olympics role

New Chelsea signing Juan Mata has told the club that he intends to play for Spain in the 2012 London Olympics as well as the 2012 European Championships next summer.

Mata, who already has two goals in three appearances for the Blues, featured last summer in the Under-21 European Championships, which Spain won, and the player revealed to the Daily Mail that he does not intend to rest at the end of the season:

“It was an important part of my development to play for the Under 21s. I wanted to share my experience with those players. We won and qualified for the Olympics in London and I hope to play in that and Euro 2012.”

It remains to be seen what the Chelsea management will feel about their player continuing to play almost without a break throughout the summer.
