Sergio Garcia 25, 73 – Llorente 62
Cornella-El Prat, Catalonia
Athletic Bilbao’s unremarkable start to the 2011/12 La Liga season continued on Sunday evening with a 2-1 defeat at the Cornella-El Prat against Espanyol.
The hosts opened the scoring after 25th minutes through former Real Betis attacker Sergio Garcia as the twice-capped Spain international leapt higher than his marker to head home an Alvaro Vasquez cross.
Fernando Llorente almost got his side back in it a few minutes later after getting on the end of a brilliant Iker Muniain through ball, but Christian Alvarez in the Espanyol net pulled off a good stop at the striker’s feet.
However, just past the hour mark, Llorente got his goal as he rose above the Espanyol defence to head in Markel Susaeta’s right-wing cross.
With 17 minutes to go, Garcia doubled his tally and grabbed the winner as he acrobatically found the net in the six-yard box after Gorka Iraizoz in the Bilbao goal fumbled a shot.
