Jol defends Chelsea striker after confidence sapping miss

Fulham manager Martin Jol has leapt to the defence of Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, after the Spaniard’s horror miss at the weekend at Old Trafford.

Torres, who had an otherwise well-received performance, scoring one goal, has been labelled as low in confidence, with some debating whether he will ever return to the form he showed at Athletico Madrid and Liverpool.

But Dutch manager Jol feels it is only a temporary matter for Torres, telling the Daily Mail: “The other year it was Darren Bent who missed a sitter – and there will be a lot of other players who miss chances. If one of my players did that, I would feel for him, because if I did not, he would lose his confidence… if he had scored another goal, you would have said ‘he is back in business'”.
