Marcelo: “The player caught me, it was a penalty”

Real Madrid full-back Marcelo protested his innocence after being sent off in his side’s opening game of the Champions League away to Dinamo Zagreb.

An Angel Di Maria strike in the second half secured the points, but the performance was slightly marred by the Brazilian’s dismissal for a second yellow, when he was booked for diving in the penalty area.

“I’ll say what happened. The player has caught me and I think it was a penalty,” Marcelo told AS post-match.

Real Madrid had 62% possession in the game and registered 24 shots, whilst the Croatian hosts also committed 16 fouls on their opponents.

“We are used to [being fouled a lot] and you have to ignore it and play football. You can see it on television, we have to ignore it, but everyone can see it easily.

“We missed some chances that we should have converted, chances that would have made the result a lot more comfortable. It was very difficult at the end of the match and it was hard to hold on to the result.

“We now have to forget about the result and focus on improving.”
