Spain 6-0 Liechtenstein: Negredo grateful for opportunity to shine

Spain qualified for next summer’s European Championships in Poland-Ukraine in comfortably over-coming Liechtenstein.

Vicente Del Bosque drew focus on the achievement, citing it is often otherwise overlooked: “We have met the target set out for this six days, and assured qualification, which is something that is not always taken into account, because we are accustomed to it. But it really matters.”

Spain had to wait until the 33rd minute before opening the scoring through Alvaro Negredo, who took time to highlight the strength of the opposition up until that point: “We struggled to break through because Liechtenstein was very closed and covered, we could not find that final pass.”

Expectations before the game were that one of Fernando Llorente or Fernando Torres would come in for Negredo for Tuesday’s game, but Negredo responded to the surprise start with Spain’s first two goals of the night:

“One of Xavi’s passes then left me in front of the goalie and I was able to score. I’m very happy because the Coach has shown confidence in me to give me this opportunity, and I wanted to repay that on the field.”

Alvaro Arbeloa even looked ahead to winning the final two qualifying games in October: “We are already at the European Championships, which was the goal set last year. There are still two more games we can win. For now, I’m happy we achieved our objective.”
