Verdu keen to renew at Espanyol

Espanyol midfielder Joan Verdu has expressed his desire to sign a new contract with the Catalan club.

The 28-year-old Barcelona youth product joined Los Periquitos in 2009 from Deportivo La Coruna, and has grown into a highly-influential role from central attacking midfield.

Linked with a move to Villarreal on the final day of the transfer window, with Espanyol reportedly rejecting a €4.5m offer, El Mundo Deportivo report that Verdu has now confirmed that he: “would be happy to renew. [Through the transfer market] I was calm at all moments, and would love to renew.

“Being one of the captains makes you grow as a player, and this year I have a different role from which I can contribute a lot.”

Verdu played in all but one of Espanyol’s games last season, scoring five goals and assisting a further seven. His current contract expires in June 2013.
