Villarreal’s Zapata relishes stopping free-scoring Bayern Munich and Mario Gomez in Champions League

Villarreal defender Cristian Zapata has looked ahead to his new team’s Champions League group stage clash with Bayern Munich.

The Yellow Submarine has been drawn against the four-time competition-winners from Germany, as well as newcomers Napoli and Manchester City. Bayern arrive at El Madrigal having beaten Freiburg 7-0 at the weekend, and having already scored 22 goals in all competitions this season, and only conceded one at the other end.

Zapata, a summer-signing from Udinese, has promised to stop Mario Gomez, who is already into double figures on the scoring charts, including eight League goals from five appearances.

The Colombian defender reiterated to AS that his decision to join Villarreal was “for challenges like this, to play these games and against these opponents.

“Mario Gomez is a great striker, one of those that if he has a chance, he will convert it. He looks to be on a roll, so we must be very focused. Undoubtedly in facing him it is a nice challenge, and one I am eager to address.”

Meanwhile, Borja Valero is suspended for the game after his sending off in the second leg of the qualifying round, but he is expected to have his ban reduced on appeal when he sits before the UEFA committee on Tuesday.
