Athletic Bilbao recorded their third consecutive victory on Monday night to climb up to 11th in the league table as they beat Osasuna 3-1.
Bilbao held on to possession throughout the game and Osasuna were more than happy to sit back and try to hit them on the break, which was effective in the opening minutes as the visitors hade several shots on goal but failed to beat Gorka Iraizoz.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side were able to take advantage of their opponents’ wasted chances and took the lead on the half hour mark through Iker Muniain. Markel Susaeta crossed from the right-wing to Fernando Llorente on the front post and the striker was able to turn his marker and square it to the 18-year-old who shot into the corner.
Igor Gabilondo doubled the Basque side’s lead soon after when Susaeta again sent the ball into the box, Llorente’s header was blocked and the ball fell in front of Gabilondo and the 32-year-old hit it first time, beating Andres Fernandez.
Javi Martinez then rose in the centre of the box to meet a perfectly placed Andoni Iraola cross and send it past Fernandez to kill the game off on the stroke of half-time.
Bilbao remained the better side after the break, holding onto possession and keeping the pressure on Osasuna who looked for a way back into the game, but any chance of a comeback was killed off when Roland Lamah was sent off with 20 minutes remaining after he picked up a second yellow card.
Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side were given a consolation in the final minutes when they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Javad Nekounam, but the damage had been done and Bilbao walked away with the three points.
