Carvalho’s Real Madrid future up in the air


Ricardo Carvalho’s future at Real Madrid is in doubt as Los Blancos deliberate over whether to offer the Portuguese defender a new contract at the end of this season.

Carvalho’s current agreement expires in June, 2012, by which time he will be 34-years-of-age, and the impressive start made by fellow centre-back Raphael Varane since his summer signing from Lille has further complicated matters.

Madrid are not known as a club that offers new contracts to players coming towards the end of their careers, no matter their prior status: Raul and Guti departed aged 32 and Fernando Hierro left to play in Qatar at 33-years-of-age, while Roberto Carlos called time on his career at the Bernab
